CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH

City of Life and Death (Chinese: 南京! 南京!; pinyin: Nánjīng! Nánjīng!) is a 2009 Chinese film directed by Lu Chuan, marking his third feature film. The film deals with the Battle of Nanjing and its aftermath (commonly referred to as "The Rape of Nanking" or the "Nanking Massacre") during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film is also known as Nanking! Nanking! or Nanjing! Nanjing!.

While originally slated for a 2008 release, the director-general of the Chinese Film Bureau announced in September that the film would be delayed to an early 2009 release.The film was eventually released on April 22, 2009 where it became a box-office success, earning RMB150m (approximately 20 million dollars) in its first two and a half weeks alone

Movie Synopsis
December 9, 1937, the city of Nanking in Japanese army siege. It seems the Chinese capital is already hopeless. Blood flood will inundate the city and who knows how many thousands of lives that would be a victim. Although there was no hope but the Chinese army still will not give up.

Beijing and Shanghai have been collapsed and was under Japanese rule. When Nanking fell then there is no hope anymore. Lu Jianxiong (Liu Ye) and several other Chinese soldiers who are still trying to survive even though they lost weapons. At the same time, Mr. Tang (Fan Wei)'m sure if he'd survived the Japanese army when he managed to enter the international safety zone.

Among the inhabitants of the city of Nanking is also a female teacher named Jiang Shuyun (Gao Yuanyuan) is desperately trying to save as many people as possible. When Lu Jianxiong could no longer defend Nanking, increasingly falling victim's life. When it's over, no less than 300 thousand lives lost due to the Japanese army atrocities
