Martha Marcy May Marlene is a 2011 American thriller film directed by Sean Durkin. Martha is an emotionally fragile woman who escapes from a religious cult in rural New York and returns home to live with her older sister Lucy and her sister’s husband Ted.18 Martha attempts to assimilate herself back into everyday society while dealing with the after effects of the brainwashing she endured at the hands of the cult.6 Martha’s memories trigger paranoid fears that members of her former cult are tracking her down.8 Her growing paranoia leads her to blend delusion with reality, alienating the people who are trying to help her.
