Buck

The first film I’ve seen at this year’s Sundance Film Festival is Buck, a documentary in U.S. Competition directed by Cindy Meehl. Real-life cowboy Buck Brannaman is considered a living legend in the horse world and was the real-life inspiration for The Horse Whisperer, which was directed by Sundance founder Robert Redford, who is also interviewed in the film

Movie Synopsis
“Warmly engaging "Buck" is a portrait of Buck Brannaman, a trainer whose remarkable way with equines provided a model for "The Horse Whisperer" in both novel and movie forms. Subject is a very likable character whose teaching wisdoms are rooted in the Golden Rule: Having suffered a nightmarish childhood, he sees no reason why man or beast should be schooled in an abusive fashion. Sundance Selects pickup won the U.S. documentary audience award at the fest, and should do particularly well as a broadcast item after further fest play and limited theatrical exposure.” - Dennis Harvey, Variety

“With their frequent focus on leftish politics, international issues and celebrity lifestyles, we think of theatrically released documentaries as primarily designed to play on the coasts rather than in the "flyover" states. But Buck is that rare documentary feature that seems ideal for a solid run in the Middle American theatres that would never book the new Morgan Spurlock or Michael Moore. Its emphasis on spectacular landscapes populated by barns, corrals and rolling grass, and on values like family and community, holds a mirror up to lives rarely chronicled with such sympathy in American nonfiction film.” - Ray Greene, Boxoffice Magazine

"Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will." So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems. BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real life "horse-whisperer", he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses - and people - with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.—© IFC Films
